Life in Belize – Growing up on Ambergris Caye

Is Ambergris Caye a good place to raise kids? This is a question I get often. A great question indeed as those with families should be concerned about where they will raise their little ones. Is there going to be plenty to do to keep those developing minds stimulated? How is the educational system?  Along with an endless list of other questions that can be asked.

What I’ll do to help answer some of these concerns is share my experience of raising a little boy on Ambergris Caye. My wife and I lived on the island for three years before we had our son.  Yes, he was born right here on the island. It has been a great experience.

Nine years later, after so many great memories, what we have ended up with is a very well rounded, polite and adventurous little boy.  An island boy! Those of you whom have met him would likely agree. Here are a few things that any family thinking of relocating to Belize can look forward to.

A great education: Schooling here starts early with kids starting preschool at the age of four. There are great schools to choose from, most being private and offering great curriculums. See my blog on schools in Belize.

Making Lots of friends: Belize is a melting pot of cultures with people moving here from all parts of the world. My son has friends his age from all different parts of Europe, Canada, Asia and the US.

Mainland Adventures: Who doesn’t like camping, hiking or just doing something new? Belize has plenty to offer in the way of new adventures and experiences. Exploring Mayan ruins, hiking to breathtaking waterfalls, getting up close and personal with Belize’s wildlife; the list goes on.  An endless supply of adventures can be shared with your little ones making memories that will be sure to last a lifetime.

Island Life: There’s nothing like growing up on the water. With so many things to do here, kids don’t just sit inside and play video games. They go outside and enjoy the island. Anything from a day of fishing with dad, to kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing from the dock, biking and again the list goes on. It’s a great place for children to grow up and have active lives.

A safe place to live: You can enjoy all of the above and so much more without too much worry or stress. Ambergris Caye is a safe place to raise little ones.  At any given time you will see little ones playing on the beaches without a care in the world. No one bothers them, they are just kids being kids. Kinda like the old days when you could let your children go out to play with their friends and didn’t have to worry.

To answer the question – In my opinion Ambergris Caye is one of the best places not only to raise a kid, but for a child to grow up!
